Afcons Breakthrough Achieved in CIDCO Water Tunnel Project, Completion Ahead of Schedule

Afcons Infrastructure Limited achieved a breakthrough in the CIDCO water tunnel project, potentially completing it six months ahead of schedule. The project, aimed at augmenting Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, marks a significant milestone in CIDCO’s history. The company has also set national tunnelling records by implementing innovative practices, ensuring high safety and quality standards. This project will enhance water supply capacity from 120 MLD to 270 MLD.

CIDCO Water Tunnel Project Milestone

Afcons Infrastructure Limited has announced a major breakthrough in the City and Industrial Development Corporation’s (CIDCO) Augmentation of Hetawane Water Supply Scheme. The breakthrough occurred at Shaft-4 in Wahal village, as part of PKG-1, and represents the first tunnel breakthrough in CIDCO’s project history. The announcement was made on December 29, 2025.

Project Details and Progress

The CIDCO Water Tunnel Package-1, executed by Afcons, includes an 8.7 km treated water tunnel. As of the announcement, 5.52 km of tunnelling work has been completed. The early completion showcases the company’s efficiency and innovative approach.

Afcons to Complete Project Early

Afcons is offering to complete the water tunnel project six months ahead of schedule, setting new national tunnelling records. Despite geological and logistical hurdles, the project team has achieved this milestone through innovative practices and a commitment to high safety and quality standards.

Impact on Water Supply

The project is designed to meet the growing water demand in Navi Mumbai’s developing regions. It involves the construction of a 13.25-kilometre raw water tunnel and a 15.4-kilometre treated water tunnel. Upon completion, the project will significantly enhance CIDCO’s water supply capacity, increasing it from the existing 120 million litres per day (MLD) to 270 MLD.

Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of CIDCO, noted that this breakthrough adds another historic moment following the first flight taking off from Navi Mumbai International Airport. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Chairman of Afcons, congratulated the project team and CIDCO for achieving this milestone.

Tunneling Record

Earlier in the project, Afcons set a new national tunnelling record by achieving 777 metres of tunnelling in a single month using the 3.2-metre diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Flamingo. Afcons surpassed its previous record of 714 metres completed in a month.
