ABB India has successfully modernized Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Vadinar-Bina Pipeline (VBPL), ensuring uninterrupted operations and bolstering national energy security. The project involved upgrading automation and monitoring systems, replacing 35 Remote Terminal Units, and enhancing cybersecurity across the 935 km pipeline. This modernization supports the supply of 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum to the Bina refinery.
Pipeline Modernization
ABB India has completed a critical energy infrastructure modernization program for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Vadinar-Bina Pipeline (VBPL). The upgrade ensures continuous operations and strengthens energy security. The 935 km cross-country oil pipeline is vital for supporting India’s energy needs by supplying 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to the Bina refinery.
Project Details
The project encompassed a complete ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage system upgrade for the pipeline. This included replacing 35 Remote Terminal Units (RTU) at pumping, pigging, and sectionalizing valve stations. New SCADA servers were installed at Vadinar and Bina, and measures were taken to strengthen security and cyber resilience. These measures included network protection, system hardening, and centralized monitoring.
Cybersecurity Enhancements
A key focus of the project was enhancing cybersecurity across the pipeline network. Measures were implemented to protect against cyber threats and ensure reliable operations. The upgrades have resulted in a more resilient and secure pipeline infrastructure.

According to Mr. Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar Bina Pipeline, BPCL, the modernization was completed seamlessly without shutdowns and has strengthened cyber security and system resilience. Mr. G Balaji, SVP at ABB India’s Energy Industries division stated that the modernization ensures continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations.
