IndiGo, India’s prominent airline and one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers, has officially announced that Willie Walsh has taken charge as its new Chief Executive Officer. This strategic appointment is aimed at steering the airline through its next phase of growth and global expansion. IndiGo had initially announced Walsh’s appointment as CEO in March 2026.
Experienced Leadership for Growth
With a career spanning over four decades in global aviation leadership, Walsh is expected to collaborate closely with the Board and management team. His mandate includes building upon IndiGo’s strong operational foundations, advancing strategic ambitions, and creating sustained long-term value for all stakeholders. Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, welcomed Walsh, noting his extensive global experience and strategic expertise as instrumental for accelerating the airline’s international expansion.
Walsh’s Extensive Aviation Background
Willie Walsh is recognized as a highly accomplished leader in the aviation industry. His career includes leading major airlines through periods of growth and transformation. Previously, he served as CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways (2005–2011), and International Airlines Group (2011–2020). He also served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

As CEO, Walsh will be responsible for the airline’s overall management and strategic direction. His focus will be on accelerating global growth, enhancing operational excellence, strengthening network and commercial strategies, and improving customer experience.
