IndiGo: Abandons Wide-Body Damp Lease Amid Cost Pressures

IndiGo is discontinuing its wide-body damp lease operations with Norse Atlantic Airways effective October 25, 2026, due to escalated operating costs and geopolitical tensions. The airline will transition Mumbai-Amsterdam flights to its Airbus A321XLR and temporarily halt services to London Heathrow. This strategic shift reaffirms IndiGo’s commitment to its long-term international growth strategy, leveraging operational learnings while preparing for its own A350 deliveries.

Strategic Shift in Long-Haul Operations

IndiGo has announced the discontinuation of its wide-body damp lease operations with Norse Atlantic Airways, a move slated to take effect on October 25, 2026. This decision comes in response to the challenging global operating environment, marked by ongoing geopolitical tensions and a significant escalation in operating costs. The airline will also conclude its damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways on October 31, 2026.

Operational Adjustments and Future Outlook

As part of this strategic pivot, IndiGo flights operating between Mumbai and Amsterdam will be transitioned to be operated using its Airbus A321XLR aircraft, effective October 25, 2026. Services to and from London Heathrow will be temporarily suspended until the delivery of IndiGo’s own A350-900 aircraft. This decision is aimed at navigating current market volatility and preserving the company’s long-term strategic objectives for international expansion.

Learnings and Commitment to Growth

The airline entered the damp lease agreement in early 2025 with Norse Atlantic Airways for six Boeing 787-9 aircraft to gain initial experience in long-haul operations. This initiative enabled IndiGo to build critical competencies in areas such as network planning, customer experience, and revenue management, providing valuable insights for its future widebody ambitions. Despite the current adjustments, IndiGo reiterates its strong commitment to expanding its global footprint and strengthening its European network, while continuing to prepare for its own widebody services.

Addressing Customer Impact

IndiGo will work closely with affected customers to offer suitable alternatives, including alternate travel arrangements and refunds, as applicable, to ensure a smooth transition during this period.
