Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) is expanding its strategic partnership with US-based Kaleris to accelerate AI-led transformation across its logistics network. This multi-year agreement will see Kaleris deploy its terminal operating system and AI-augmented solutions across 15 APSEZ container terminals. The investment of up to USD 850 million aims to enhance efficiency, automation, and capacity, targeting one billion tonnes of cargo handling by 2030.
Strategic Partnership for AI Integration
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ), India’s leading integrated transport operator, has significantly expanded its strategic partnership with Kaleris. This collaboration is set to drive next-generation capabilities within APSEZ’s extensive ports and logistics network, aligning with its broader 2030 objectives. The initiative is a key component of APSEZ’s planned investment of USD 850 million towards decarbonisation and technology upgrades.
Accelerating Automation and Optimization
Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Kaleris will deploy its foundational terminal operating system and AI-augmented advanced container handling and optimisation solutions. These solutions will be implemented across all 15 APSEZ container terminals, spanning nine domestic and international ports. Following initial deployments across six ports, APSEZ will now scale these advanced operating, planning, optimisation, and automation capabilities throughout its maritime and logistics network. This aims to create a unified digital backbone, thereby enhancing efficiency, consistency, and end-to-end visibility.
Tangible Efficiency Gains Expected
The deployment of Kaleris’ Advanced Optimization is projected to yield substantial efficiency improvements. APSEZ anticipates up to a 20% improvement in Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane productivity and up to a 14% improvement in terminal truck productivity. These gains reinforce APSEZ’s ambition to build a technology-led integrated transport platform and scale effectively for long-term growth. Furthermore, APSEZ expects to unlock 91 MMT of additional capacity, approximately 10% of its installed capacity, by 2030, with the Kaleris collaboration accelerating this progress.
Vision for Future Growth and Technology
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of APSEZ, stated, “AI-enabled automation will define the next frontier of competitiveness in ports and logistics.” He highlighted that the Kaleris integration will enhance productivity, improve turnaround times, and consistently deliver a superior customer experience. Kirk Knauff, President and CEO of Kaleris, added, “APSEZ is demonstrating the real impact of an AI-enabled port network at scale. Expanding to all 15 terminals reflects the results already achieved and the trust behind this partnership.”
As cargo volumes increase and supply chains grow more complex, APSEZ is making significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), computer vision, and advanced optimisation tools. These investments are aimed at enabling real-time visibility, smarter resource allocation, and faster decision-making. The expanded deployment of Kaleris’ N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) across APSEZ’s network is expected to improve yard utilisation, accelerate vessel turnaround, enhance planning accuracy, and deliver more reliable, predictable cargo movement for customers. This aligns with APSEZ’s ambitious goal of handling one billion tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.
APSEZ’s Expanding Network and Capacity
APSEZ, a part of the Adani Group, operates as a leading Integrated Transport Operator. The company manages an ecosystem of 15 strategically located ports and terminals across India’s west, south, and east coasts. Its capabilities also include a diversified marine fleet of 137 vessels, 12 multi-modal logistics parks, 3.1 million sq. ft. of warehouses, and a fleet of over 25,000 trucks. APSEZ currently boasts a cargo handling capacity of 653 million tonnes per annum, representing approximately 27% of India’s total port volumes, with a clear target of 1 billion tonnes throughput by 2030.
