New Drug Delivery System Introduced
Alkem Laboratories Ltd. has announced a significant development in the Indian pharmaceutical market with the launch of semaglutide in a single-shot pre-filled syringe format. This innovative delivery system marks Alkem as the first company in India to introduce semaglutide in this form, aiming to enhance patient access and convenience for managing Type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity.
Affordable Treatment Options
The newly launched semaglutide pre-filled syringes are priced starting at INR350, significantly lowering the entry barriers for patients to access this important therapy. This initiative aligns with Alkem’s commitment to providing high-quality, affordable medicines. The company received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for the manufacture and marketing of these syringes. This follows Alkem’s earlier launch of semaglutide in pre-filled disposable and reusable injection pens in March 2026.
Expanding Treatment Portfolio
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of Alkem, stated, “Semaglutide has the potential to change how we manage metabolic disorders. With the launch of our pre-filled syringes, we are widening the choice available to doctors and patients, alongside the pen options we have already introduced. In India, where we are seeing a continuous rise in disease burden, offering multiple, practical drug delivery formats is an important step in helping more patients start and stay on the therapy.” Alkem also has regulatory approval for semaglutide vials, which are planned for launch soon.
