NLC India Limited Strategic Partnership Formed with NPCIL for Nuclear Power Development

NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to establish a Joint Venture for developing nuclear power projects. The collaboration focuses on deploying 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) to support India’s 100 GW nuclear capacity target by 2047. This strategic move aligns with the nation’s Net Zero Carbon goals and strengthens NLCIL’s diversified energy portfolio through sustainable base-load power generation.

Strategic Collaboration for Clean Energy

On May 25, 2026, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) formalized a partnership with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) through a signed Memorandum of Understanding. This joint venture aims to scale up India’s nuclear energy infrastructure, specifically targeting the development of 700 MW Indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR). The agreement also provides a framework for potential investment in existing and upcoming nuclear power projects.

Supporting National Energy Targets

The collaboration is a direct response to India’s ambitious roadmap of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Following the enactment of the SHANTI Bill in December 2025, which modernized the policy framework for the nuclear sector, this partnership is designed to provide reliable, clean base-load power. By integrating NLCIL’s extensive power sector experience with NPCIL’s specialized nuclear expertise, the venture seeks to bolster the nation’s long-term energy security.

Diversifying into Sustainable Power

For NLCIL, this initiative marks a significant milestone in its strategic shift toward a diversified and sustainable energy mix. While the company continues to manage its conventional mining and power assets, it has aggressively expanded into green energy sectors, including solar, wind, pumped hydro storage, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and green hydrogen. This nuclear foray complements these green initiatives, ensuring a robust, carbon-neutral power supply for India’s growing developmental needs.
