Boosting Indigenous Defence Capabilities
In a move to strengthen India’s strategic defence sector, Bharat Dynamics Limited has officially launched the development of a state-of-the-art Naval Systems Manufacturing Facility. The foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh on May 15, 2026, signaling a significant expansion in the company’s production infrastructure. This initiative is a critical step towards realizing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Strategic Project Scope and Infrastructure
The new manufacturing complex, spread across 160 acres, is strategically located in the Anakapalli district. The facility will be equipped with specialized infrastructure including advanced assembly buildings, explosive handling and storage units, and sophisticated testing facilities, such as acoustic tanks. These enhancements are specifically designed to meet the Indian Navy’s growing demand for advanced underwater combat systems, including heavyweight torpedoes like Varunastra, lightweight torpedoes, and associated naval countermeasures.
Economic Impact and Development
The project, which carries an estimated capital outlay of Rs 500 crore, is scheduled to reach completion in approximately four years. Beyond its primary goal of bolstering national security and underwater warfare preparedness, the facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth. The project is projected to create 3,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities while fostering the growth of local MSMEs and ancillary industries within the region.
