VA Tech Wabag First Bio-CNG Project Launched in Ghaziabad

VA Tech Wabag, in partnership with PEAK Sustainability Ventures, has announced its first Bio-CNG plant at the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in Dundaheda, Ghaziabad. Operating under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, this initiative aims to convert wastewater into green energy, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 250,000 metric tons over the project’s lifespan. The project marks the initial step in a shared vision to establish 100 Bio-CNG plants across India.

Advancing Waste-to-Energy Solutions

VA Tech Wabag and PEAK Sustainability Ventures have officially commenced their inaugural Bio-CNG project. This initiative, which aligns with a shared vision first announced on January 29, 2024, seeks to integrate clean energy production with existing sewage treatment infrastructure. By capturing raw biogas from the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in Dundaheda, the project aims to transform an environmental challenge into a high-quality, renewable fuel source for mobility and industrial applications.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The facility is designed to significantly mitigate the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, thereby supporting India’s commitment to climate action and SDG 13. It is estimated that the project will sequester approximately 250,000 metric tons of carbon emissions throughout its operation. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to bolster local air quality and generate employment, while all primary equipment will be sourced domestically to support the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Strategic Execution and Future Roadmap

The project will be managed by GHAZIABAD BIOENERGY PRIVATE LIMITED, a specialized vehicle formed specifically for this venture. VA Tech Wabag will oversee execution and maintain operations for a 15-year period. While WABAG provides technical expertise, PEAK will contribute strategic insights and facilitate access to climate-focused capital to accelerate the scaling of this waste-to-energy model. Commercial operations are anticipated to begin within one year.
