Sai Life Sciences has marked a major sustainability milestone by transitioning its Bidar campus to 100% renewable energy. The facility, which includes flagship API and animal health API manufacturing units, is the first site within an Indian CRDMO to reach this goal. This achievement reflects the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability, having increased its renewable power usage from 21% in 2020 to full conversion in fiscal 2026.
A Significant Sustainability Achievement
Sai Life Sciences has announced that its Bidar campus, comprising Unit IV and Unit VI, now operates entirely on renewable electricity. This transition makes it the first facility among Indian CRDMOs to achieve 100% renewable power usage, setting a new standard for operational excellence in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
The Path to Full Conversion
The company achieved this milestone through a phased, multi-year strategy. Renewable energy consumption at the site grew steadily from 21% in 2020 to 57% in 2022 and 89% in fiscal 2024. Currently, 97% of the site’s electricity requirement is sourced directly from wind and solar power through Open Access agreements, with the remaining 3% balanced using International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).
Broader Impact and Future Strategy
The transition involved direct investments in clean energy infrastructure, including a 2.7 MW wind project, alongside comprehensive energy-efficiency initiatives such as equipment upgrades and digital monitoring. Across the entire organization, nearly 80% of electricity now comes from renewable sources. This shift has successfully resulted in zero market-based Scope 2 emissions for the company, avoiding an estimated 35,110 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
