Tata Power Expands Bhutan Hydropower Partnership to Over 5,000 MW

Tata Power has amended its strategic partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) by adding the 404 MW Nyera Amari I & II Integrated Hydropower Project. This inclusion raises the total identified hydropower capacity under the collaboration to 5,033 MW. The move aligns with Bhutan’s vision to reach a 25,000 MW generation capacity by 2040 and reinforces Tata Power’s role as a leading regional clean energy partner.

Strengthening Cross-Border Energy Ties

On May 8, 2026, Tata Power announced a significant amendment to its existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC). Originally signed on November 19, 2024, the partnership aims to accelerate clean energy development in the Kingdom of Bhutan. By integrating the 404 MW Nyera Amari I & II project, the collaboration now targets a total capacity of 5,033 MW, surpassing the initial commitment of 4,500 MW.

Key Hydropower Portfolio Highlights

The expanded portfolio includes several landmark projects vital for regional energy security and economic growth. Work has already commenced on the 600 MW Khorlochhu and 1,125 MW Dorjilung hydropower projects, which together account for approximately 35% of the committed 5 GW pipeline. Other major projects within the partnership include:

  • Gongri Reservoir with Jeri Pumped Storage: 2,540 MW
  • Chamkharchhu IV: 364 MW
  • Nyera Amari I & II: 404 MW

Strategic Significance

This partnership is a cornerstone for both nations, supporting Bhutan’s goal of becoming a leading clean energy nation and providing India with access to reliable, sustainable power during peak demand periods. Beyond hydropower, both companies are also evaluating the joint development of 500 MW of solar PV projects in Bhutan. Tata Power’s long-standing relationship with DGPC, dating back to the 2008 commissioning of the 126 MW Dagachhu project, remains central to this strategic regional expansion.
