L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore has been awarded a significant EPC contract by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL) for a coal-to-ammonium-nitrate project in Odisha. The project, classified under the ₹1,000 to 2,500 crore range, focuses on an Ammonia Synthesis Unit. This win strengthens L&T’s expertise in clean syngas-based ammonia synthesis and supports India’s broader self-reliance agenda in the chemical infrastructure sector.
Advancing Clean Energy Infrastructure
On May 8, 2026, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced a new order win from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL), a joint venture between Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). The project entails the delivery of a Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) Package-3 for a Coal-to-Ammonium-Nitrate project located in Odisha.
Scope of the EPC Contract
The contract designates L&T with single-point responsibility for the Ammonia Synthesis Unit. The comprehensive scope includes the process license, basic design, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction. Furthermore, the company will handle mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and performance guarantee test runs to ensure the plant operates at high efficiency and safety standards.
Strategic Significance
Management highlighted that this project is a critical component of the coal-to-chemicals value chain. By focusing on gasification-based downstream chemical infrastructure, L&T aims to support India’s self-reliance agenda. The development of indigenous ammonia capacity is expected to strengthen supply chain resilience and boost downstream industrial ecosystems, reinforcing L&T’s role as a primary partner for complex, nation-building engineering projects.
