Bharti Airtel, in strategic partnership with Google and AdaniConneX, has officially commenced construction on a gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This project, part of a massive US$15 billion investment over five years (2026-2030), aims to establish a robust AI ecosystem to support the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The development includes three data center campuses, an expanded fiber-optic network, and initiatives for community empowerment and sustainable industrial growth.
A Milestone for India’s Digital Future
On April 28, 2026, Google officially broke ground on its landmark AI hub in Visakhapatnam. This initiative represents a cornerstone of India’s digital infrastructure, supported by a US$15 billion investment plan spanning 2026 to 2030. The project is being developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel, focusing on creating a scalable AI ecosystem to power the country’s technological ambitions.
Project Infrastructure and Scope
The India AI Hub is a massive undertaking, featuring three data center campuses with a total capacity of nearly 1 GW. Key technical components of the project include:
- High-performance computing: Designed to provide low-latency services for AI-powered solutions.
- America-India Connect: An initiative to significantly expand fiber-optic network capacity.
- Clean Energy Strategy: A long-term commitment to support India’s goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Strategic Industrial Impact
The groundbreaking ceremony was accompanied by the Bharat AI Shakti Conclave, a conference designed to accelerate the economic value chain for the region. By prioritizing a local-first procurement approach and integrating local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into the project’s supply chain, the collaboration aims to build sustainable, generational impact. Additionally, the project includes comprehensive community development programs, such as the STAR (Skills Trade and Readiness) program, which aims to train over 1,000 workers for critical roles in digital infrastructure.
Commitment to Community Development
Beyond its industrial goals, the AI hub integrates various social initiatives, including:
- Securing Water Futures: Integrated watershed management in partnership with Sponge Collaborative.
- Modernizing Maritime Trades: Equipping over 1,000 fishers with advanced navigation and forecasting tools.
- Empowering Women: The NARI Shakti program, designed to support 10,000+ entrepreneurs through digital and financial literacy training.
