Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has successfully incorporated a new Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named Mwanga Transmission Company Limited in Kenya. This entity was formed on April 21, 2026, to implement the Kenya Independent Power Transmission Project under a public-private partnership. The project is a strategic collaboration between Powergrid and Africa50 to enhance power infrastructure in the region.
Strategic Expansion in Kenya
Powergrid has marked a significant milestone in its international operations with the incorporation of Mwanga Transmission Company Limited. This new private limited company was established in Kenya on April 21, 2026, following the receipt of its Certificate of Incorporation from the local Registrar of Companies. This move aligns with the firm’s broader strategy to expand its power transmission footprint in African markets through public-private partnerships.
Project Structure and Ownership
The SPV was established specifically to execute the Kenya Independent Power Transmission Project, a project agreement signed with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO). The ownership structure of the SPV reflects a strategic partnership aimed at fostering infrastructure development: Powergrid holds a 40 percent equity stake, while Africa50 retains a 60 percent majority interest. This collaboration leverages the technical expertise of Powergrid alongside regional developmental support to modernize electricity infrastructure within Kenya.
