Jindal Steel Limited Advancing Coal Gasification for Sustainable Steel Production

Jindal Steel has achieved a global milestone by pioneering the use of swadeshi coal through advanced gasification technology to drive low-carbon steel production. By integrating synthetic gas (syngas) into its Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plants, galvanizing units, and blast furnaces, the company is reducing reliance on imported fuels and coking coal. This strategic shift enhances energy self-reliance, lowers emission intensity, and supports India’s broader vision of sustainable, cost-competitive industrial growth.

Pioneering Low-Carbon Steelmaking

Jindal Steel has established a global first by implementing coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production. By utilizing syngas for iron-making, the company has effectively mitigated fuel shortages, including natural gas, LPG, and propane. This innovative approach has now been expanded to galvanizing and colour coating line furnaces, marking a breakthrough application within the steel industry.

Strategic Integration and Efficiency

The company has successfully pioneered syngas injection into blast furnaces, a move that significantly lowers dependence on imported coking coal and reduces carbon emissions per tonne of steel. This integrated deployment across the steelmaking value chain sets a new benchmark for operational efficiency and sustainability. Mr. P.K. Biju Nair, Executive Director Angul, emphasized that syngas derived from domestic coal acts as a viable substitute for imported methanol, ammonia, and LNG, which is essential for future-proofing growth and reducing foreign exchange outflow.

Supporting National Energy Objectives

The initiatives align with the National Coal Gasification Mission, reflecting the company’s commitment to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. By coupling coal gasification with Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, Jindal Steel is positioning itself to meet stringent global standards such as CBAM compliance, ultimately strengthening the company’s export competitiveness while maintaining its robust mine-to-metal operational model.
