Indian Energy Exchange Records Highest Ever Annual and Quarterly Electricity Volumes in FY’26

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported a record-breaking performance for FY’26, achieving its highest ever annual electricity traded volume of 141 BU, marking a 17% year-on-year increase. Growth was supported by strong performances in the Real-Time Market (RTM) and Green Market segments. Despite rising national power demand, improved supply liquidity on the exchange platform led to a notable decline in market clearing prices compared to the previous fiscal year.

Annual Performance Highlights

During the fiscal year 2026, IEX demonstrated robust growth across multiple trading segments. The exchange achieved a historic milestone with 141 BU in total electricity traded volume, growing by 17% YoY. The Real-Time Market (RTM) proved to be a major growth driver, expanding by 41% YoY, while the Green Market saw a 23% YoY increase. Additionally, the company saw its highest ever yearly trade of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) at 187.20 lakh units, reflecting a 5% YoY growth.

Market Trends and Price Dynamics

While India’s power demand grew by 1.1% during the year, increased contributions from wind, hydro, and solar generation, combined with consistent coal-based supply, enhanced market liquidity. This liquidity shift resulted in more competitive pricing for participants. The average price in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) dropped to Rs 3.86/unit, a 13.7% decline over FY’25. Similarly, the RTM price settled at Rs 3.59/unit, representing a 16% reduction compared to the previous year.

Quarterly and Monthly Achievements

The final quarter, Q4FY’26 (January–March), set a new benchmark with the highest quarterly volume of 39.4 BU, an increase of 24.3% YoY. Specifically, the month of March 2026 witnessed the highest ever monthly traded volume of 13.90 BU, growing by 23.5% YoY. This period also saw strong performance in the REC segment, with 71.70 lakh certificates traded in Q4 alone, emphasizing the growing importance of environmental markets within the exchange’s portfolio.
