Hindustan Zinc Partners with Tata Steel to Scale Low-Carbon Zinc Solutions Using EcoZen

Hindustan Zinc (HZL) has expanded its strategic partnership with Tata Steel to integrate HZL’s low-carbon zinc solution, EcoZen, into sustainable steel manufacturing. EcoZen boasts a verified carbon footprint of less than 1 tonne of CO2e per tonne of zinc, which is approximately 75% lower than the global industry average. This collaboration aims to significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions for downstream users like Tata Steel and promote greener supply chains across India’s industrial sector.

Strategic Partnership for Decarbonization

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), a Vedanta Group company and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, announced on March 23, 2026, an expansion of its engagement with Tata Steel through the EcoZen initiative. This expanded collaboration focuses on integrating HZL’s low-carbon zinc product into sustainable steel manufacturing processes.

The core focus of this partnership is reinforcing climate-aligned metal sourcing and supporting sustainability goals, particularly in reducing Scope 3 emissions for partners. The engagement signifies a proactive focus on decarbonization and responsible sourcing, positioning both entities at the forefront of developing a more resilient steel value chain.

EcoZen: A Low-Carbon Solution

EcoZen is highlighted as Asia’s first low-carbon ‘green’ zinc brand, produced entirely using renewable energy. Key environmental metrics provided in the release include:

  • Carbon footprint of less than 1 tonne of CO2 equivalent per tonne of zinc.
  • This represents over 75% lower carbon intensity compared to the global industry average.

Mr. Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, stated that EcoZen supports the evolving needs of global manufacturing. The adoption of EcoZen in galvanizing steel can help avoid approximately 400 kg of CO2 emissions per tonne of steel when compared to conventional zinc.

Commentary from Both Companies

Mr. Ranjan Sinha, Chief Procurement Officer at Tata Steel, commented on the delivery of EcoZen to their Sahibabad plant, underscoring shared commitments to sustainable practices and advancing green technologies within their supplier ecosystem.

Hindustan Zinc noted that its partnership with Tata Steel has been ongoing for over two decades, making this expansion a significant milestone in scaling climate impact across the metals ecosystem.
