Securing a Landmark ‘Mega’ Water Project
VA TECH WABAG LIMITED has successfully secured a crucial contract via a Joint Venture (JV) where WABAG is the leader. The award comes from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) to execute the Chennai Climate Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project (CCRWSSP). The total consideration size for this contract is classified as a ‘Mega Order’, indicating a value exceeding INR 1,000 Crores.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The objective of this project is the development of a looped transmission network for Greater Chennai City (GCC), funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This new infrastructure will establish a city-wide water grid platform, enabling flexible water routing and improved pressure management. The project scope includes the development of bulk transmission pipelines, feeder mains, pumping stations, and underground tanks, followed by integration with the central SCADA system.
This initiative is particularly vital given Chennai’s ongoing challenges with water scarcity and uneven distribution. The proposed ring main system will serve as the backbone of the water grid, strengthening the bulk transmission network and dynamically balancing water flows across zones.
Timeline and Operations
The execution of the physical infrastructure is set to be completed within 54 months. Following commissioning, the JV will also undertake 10 years of operation and maintenance. Mr. Shailesh Kumar, CEO – India Cluster, highlighted that the project is a major step toward building resilient and future-ready water infrastructure for Chennai.
