WABAG Secures Landmark PPP Contract in Chennai
VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), a leading pure-play water technology multinational, announced on March 12, 2026, that it has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). The contract involves the Refurbishment, Finance, Operate, Maintain and Transfer (RFOMT) of a 45 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) Plant situated at Kodungaiyur, Chennai, executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Project Scope and Duration
The existing facility, originally developed by CMWSSB in 2019, supplies treated wastewater to industries within the Manali-Ennore and Manali-Minjur corridors. Under the new agreement, WABAG is tasked with:
- Refurbishment and Upgradation: Restoring the TTRO facility’s full 45 MLD capacity within a period of 18 months.
- Operation and Maintenance (O&M): Operating and maintaining the upgraded facility for a subsequent period of 18.5 years.
Strategic Significance and Order Classification
This project award is categorized by WABAG as a ‘Mega Order’, signifying a contract value above INR 1,000 Crores, given the extended O&M component. This win further strengthens WABAG’s existing portfolio in Chennai, as the company already operates the 45 MLD TTRO facility at Koyambedu and a 40 MLD TTRO facility in Ghaziabad under a PPP model.
Mr. S Varadarajan, Whole Time Director & Chief Growth Officer, expressed delight, stating the project reinforces WABAG’s leadership in advanced water recycling and reuse solutions, which are critical for enabling sustainable industrial water management and supporting Chennai’s long-term water security.
