SJVN Limited announced that its flagship project, the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS), has crossed the historic landmark of 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative power generation since its commissioning in May 2004. Chairman & Managing Director, Sh. Bhupender Gupta, congratulated the team on this achievement, highlighting the station’s role as a cornerstone of the northern power grid and its contribution to clean energy targets.
NJHPS Crosses 150 Billion Units Cumulative Generation
SJVN Limited is celebrating a major operational success as its Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) achieved the historic milestone of generating 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative electricity. This landmark reaffirms NJHPS’s position as the nation’s largest underground hydro power station and its vital role in strengthening the national power grid with clean energy.
Executive Congratulates Team on Reliability
Sh. Bhupender Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, SJVN, extended congratulations to the NJHPS team during celebrations held at the Power House. He noted that since its commissioning in May 2004, NJHPS has consistently demonstrated exceptional operational reliability. He emphasized that the station has emerged as a “cornerstone of the northern power grid,” ensuring dependable green energy supply and grid stability, particularly during peak demand periods.
Record Performance Benchmarks Highlighted
The announcement detailed several notable performance benchmarks achieved by NJHPS:
- Highest-ever annual generation: 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12.
- Record monthly generation: 1,222.170 million units in July 2024.
- Highest-ever daily generation: 39.572 million units, recorded on 13 August 2024.
Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact
The achievement of 150 BU carries significant environmental value, representing the large-scale displacement of fossil-fuel-based generation and the resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, thereby supporting India’s clean energy transition commitments. Furthermore, the project has been instrumental in regional socio-economic development through employment creation and infrastructure growth in the surrounding areas.
Sh. Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel), lauded the efforts of all past and present employees, while Sh. Rajeev Kapoor, Head of Project, thanked all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Power and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, for their support.
Testament to Engineering Excellence
SJVN continues to benefit from systematic modernization, digital monitoring, and rigorous maintenance practices at the station. This achievement is seen as a testament to engineering excellence and underscores the strategic importance of hydropower as India advances towards an expanded renewable energy portfolio.
