Hindalco Announces ₹21,000 Crore Smelter Expansion and Commissions Facilities

Hindalco Industries announced a ₹21,000 crore expansion of its aluminium smelter in Sambalpur, Odisha, adding 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum capacity. The company also commissioned a ₹4,500 crore Flat Rolled Products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil facility in Odisha. These projects will create over 15,000 jobs and reduce India’s import dependence.

Strategic Expansion in Odisha

Hindalco Industries Ltd has announced a major expansion of its aluminium operations in Odisha, with a ₹21,000-crore investment in a 3.6 lakh-tonne-per-annum smelter expansion at its Aditya Aluminium complex in Sambalpur. Additionally, a 1.7 lakh-tonne-per-annum Flat Rolled Products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing facility has been commissioned with an investment of ₹4,500 crore.

Key Project Benefits

The projects are expected to generate over 15,000 additional jobs, supporting the EV, defense, and advanced manufacturing sectors. The expansion aims to reduce India’s import dependence and enhance domestic capabilities in high-grade aluminium products.

India’s First Battery Foil Facility

The battery-grade aluminium foil facility is designed to support up to 100 GWh of lithium-ion cell manufacturing capacity. This facility is strategically integrated with the FRP complex, ensuring a direct input supply.

Broader Investment in Odisha

These projects are part of Hindalco’s broader growth capital expenditure program, with around ₹37,000 crore planned for Odisha across upstream and downstream aluminium operations.

Reducing Import Dependence

The expansion is expected to reduce import dependence by nearly half, supporting domestic manufacturing and improving India’s competitiveness in high-grade aluminium products. Hindalco accounts for over 50% of the domestic market. A portion of the Aditya Aluminium smelter power requirements will be met through round-the-clock renewable energy (RE-RTC).

Statements from Leadership

Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, stated that the expansion helps build a fully integrated aluminium ecosystem. Mr. Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Ltd, added that the FRP expansion and smelter growth at Sambalpur exemplify the company’s integrated upstream-downstream growth strategy.

Sustainability Focus

Sustainability underpins Hindalco’s growth strategy, with downstream manufacturing delivering lower carbon intensity per tonne, supported by renewable energy integration, advanced technologies and responsible resource management.

Hindalco’s Odisha Presence

Hindalco’s presence in Odisha spans over 15 years. The company has already invested more than ₹25,000 crore across bauxite mining, alumina refining, primary aluminium smelting, and downstream manufacturing.
