JSW Energy Signs Power Purchase Agreement for 1,600 MW with West Bengal DISCOM

JSW Energy’s subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for a greenfield 1,600 MW thermal power plant. The plant will be commissioned in Salboni, West Bengal, within 6 years and awarded under competitive bidding using domestic linkage coal.

Power Purchase Agreement

JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, a subsidiary of JSW Energy, has formalized a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL). The agreement is for a 1,600 MW (2 x 800 MW) super/ultra-super critical thermal power plant.

Project Details and Location

The greenfield thermal power plant will be located in Salboni, West Bengal, and is expected to be commissioned within 6 years. The plant was awarded under a competitive bidding process initiated by WBSEDCL and will utilize domestic linkage coal allocated to West Bengal.

Capacity Expansion at Salboni

With this agreement, JSW Energy will have a total capacity of 3,200 MW at the Salboni site, making it their largest single-location asset.

According to Mr. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, this reinforces the company’s commitment to India’s energy security. The project benefits from its strategic proximity to coal blocks and synergies with the existing 1,600 MW unit under construction.

JSW Energy’s Thermal Capacity

JSW Energy currently owns and operates 5,658 MW of thermal generation capacity. With the 3,200 MW under construction at Salboni and an option to add 1,800 MW at KSK Mahanadi, the company’s total thermal capacity is expected to increase to 10,658 MW.

Total Locked-In Generation Capacity

JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 32.1 GW, which includes 13.3 GW operational, 14 GW under construction (thermal and renewable), 150 MW under acquisition (hydro), and a pipeline of 4.6 GW. They also have 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity.

Future Goals

The company aims to reach 30 GW generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030, with the goal of achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050.
