Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has started supplying underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. The first set was flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi plant. The transformers will be used in trains with operational speeds up to 160 kmph. BHEL’s Bhopal unit is manufacturing the traction motors for the project.
Vande Bharat Project Milestone
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a milestone in its ‘Make in India’ initiatives by commencing the supply of underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. The project is executed by a BHEL-led consortium with TRSL. The official announcement was made on January 15, 2026.
Jhansi Plant Flag-Off
A flag-off ceremony was held at BHEL’s Jhansi plant, where the first set of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers were virtually flagged off by key BHEL directors. Traction Converters for the project were previously flagged off from BHEL’s Bengaluru plant.
Project Details
The new development strengthens BHEL’s entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment, supporting train operations at speeds up to 160 kmph with a design speed of 180 kmph. The Traction Transformers will be sent to Kolkata for final assembly in the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. The Traction Motor has been developed by BHEL’s Bhopal unit.
Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles
BHEL-Jhansi recently received an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMV), expanding its role in the railway infrastructure domain beyond conventional rolling stock. This aligns with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, as the RBMVs will be manufactured domestically. RBMVs are used for construction, inspection, repair, and upkeep of railway tracks, ensuring track safety and ride comfort.
