Ice-Hockey Rink Project Secured
ITI Limited, the country’s first PSU post-independence, has secured a significant work order for an Ice-Hockey Rink Project in Kaza, Lahaul & Spiti within Himachal Pradesh. The formal announcement was released on December 30, 2025.
Project Details and Value
The project has a value of ₹72.76 Crores. The funds have been released by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul & Spiti, specifically for the construction of an Ice-Hockey Rink facility at Kaza Soma, in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
Project Scope
Under the awarded contract, ITI Limited will construct a full-fledged Ice-Hockey Rink, including a 500-kW solar power backup system. The facility will also include installation of CCTV cameras, enhanced lighting, and other necessary accessories, ensuring it is a high-quality facility suitable for both players and spectators.
Strategic Impact
This project is part of a broader initiative aimed at developing world-class sports infrastructure in the high-altitude region of Spiti Valley. It complements other ongoing initiatives under the High-Altitude Sports Training Centre scheme. This investment aims to boost sports opportunities, promote youth engagement, and develop sports tourism in the Lahaul & Spiti district, situated at an altitude of approximately 12,000 ft.

Broader Initiatives in Himachal Pradesh
ITI Limited is also involved in laying 20115 kms of cable in 81 blocks covering 3615 Gram Panchayaths under the Bharatnet Phase-III project. Additionally, ITI is tasked with building the State Network Operation Center (SNOC). To date, ITI Limited has laid approximately 990 kms of OFC cable across Himachal Pradesh.

Mr. Rai further commented, “With the improved infrastructure, continued efforts of all the stakeholders, I am confident that Spiti will soon be recognized not only for Ice Hockey but for winter sports as a whole”.

Ice Hockey began in Spiti in 2019, and has already achieved significant milestones, including winning multiple medals in the national games.
