Vedanta Faces Penalties on Tax Issues, Files Appeals

Vedanta Limited has received orders related to tax penalties from commercial tax authorities and the Joint Commissioner of GST & Central Excise. Penalties include INR 19,33,693.78 and INR 10,65,43,888 respectively. The company intends to appeal against the latter order and does not anticipate any material financial impact from either. Both penalties relate to issues regarding input tax credit and delayed tax payments.

Tax Penalty from Commercial Tax Department

Vedanta Limited received an order from the Office of the Commercial Tax, Panaji Ward, confirming a penalty of INR 19,33,693.78, along with applicable tax demand and interest. The issue relates to the availment and utilization of input tax credit during the financial year 2018-19. The order, dated December 24, 2025, was received by the company on the same day.

GST & Central Excise Penalty

Vedanta also received an order from the Office of the Joint Commissioner, GST & Central Excise, Rourkela, confirming a penalty of INR 10,65,43,888, along with applicable tax demand and interest. This penalty relates to delayed payment of tax liability spanning from financial year 2018-19 to 2022-23. The order, also dated December 24, 2025, was received on the same day.

Company’s Response

Vedanta is evaluating its options regarding the penalty from the Commercial Tax Department and does not expect any material financial impact. The company intends to file an appeal against the GST & Central Excise order with the Appellate Authorities, remaining hopeful for a favorable outcome. As with the first case, Vedanta does not foresee a material financial impact.
