GAIL Subsidiary Commissions Major PTA Plant

GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has announced the successful commissioning of its 1.25 MTPA Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant. The facility is strategically located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka.

Plant Revival and Strategic Importance

The plant was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL) and was acquired by GAIL in 2023 through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). Following the acquisition, GAIL undertook an extensive revival and refurbishment exercise to overcome significant engineering, technological, and operational challenges. This successful commissioning represents a key milestone in GAIL’s strategy to enhance its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector.

Boosting Domestic Capacity

PTA is a critical raw material for the polyester industry, used in the manufacturing of polyester fibre, yarn, PET resin, and other polyester-based products. With its 1.25 million tons per annum capacity, GMPL’s facility is expected to significantly increase India’s domestic PTA manufacturing capacity. This will help in reducing import dependence for this vital raw material and support the growth of the country’s downstream polyester industry.

Market and Logistics

The plant benefits from its strategic location near New Mangalore Port, supported by dedicated logistics infrastructure for efficient movement of raw materials and finished products. GAIL will market the PTA product under the brand name ‘G-Tex’, leveraging its established marketing network and customer reach.
