Grasim Industries and Suzlon partner for recyclable wind turbine technology

Grasim Industries, through its Advanced Materials Division and renewable arm Aditya Birla Renewables Limited (ABRen), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Suzlon Energy Limited. The collaboration aims to develop, commercialize, and scale India’s first wind turbines featuring recyclable blades powered by Recyclamine® technology. This partnership signifies a commitment to circular economy principles in the wind energy sector, addressing end-of-life challenges for turbine blades and reducing environmental impact.

Strategic Pact for Sustainable Wind Energy

Grasim Industries Limited, via its Advanced Materials Division and its renewable energy subsidiary Aditya Birla Renewables Limited (ABRen), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Suzlon Energy Limited. This collaboration focuses on a pilot basis for the development, commercialization, and scaling of wind turbines equipped with recyclable blade technology.

Advancing Circularity in Wind Energy

The partnership, signed at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026, underscores a shared dedication to enhancing circularity within the wind energy sector. It aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable end-of-life solutions for wind turbine blades, which are traditionally made from thermoset composite materials that are difficult to recycle.

Recyclamine® Technology for Sustainable Blades

Grasim will supply blades manufactured using its Recyclamine® epoxy technology. This technology allows for chemical recycling of blades at their end-of-life, enabling the recovery of valuable composite constituents for reuse in new applications. This approach supports circular economy principles, minimizes waste, and reduces the environmental footprint of wind energy projects.

Demonstrating Commercial Viability

Under the agreement, Suzlon, as the wind turbine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), will integrate the Recyclamine® technology into its manufacturing process for recyclable wind turbine blades. Aditya Birla Renewables will deploy a wind turbine featuring these recyclable blades at a selected project site. This initiative will serve to demonstrate the commercial viability of circular blade technology in real-world conditions. Both parties will also explore opportunities for broader market adoption of these recyclable blade-enabled wind turbines across India and other mutually agreed markets.

Executive Statements

Rajesh Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, Advanced Materials, Grasim Industries Ltd., stated, “This collaboration marks an important step toward building a truly circular wind energy ecosystem. By combining the Recyclamine® technology with Suzlon’s manufacturing expertise and ABRen’s renewable energy ambitions, we are demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. Together, we aim to accelerate the adoption of recyclable wind turbine blades and set new benchmarks for resource efficiency in the wind industry.”

Girish Tanti, Co-Founder, Suzlon Group, added, “The future of renewable energy lies not just in generating clean power, but in building truly circular solutions. At Suzlon, we are advancing this vision through our flagship S144 platform, which has one of the world’s lowest carbon footprints among wind turbines, and by working towards making all future turbines recyclable within the next three to four years. This partnership brings together innovation and scale to accelerate material circularity, with the potential to enable significant CO2 savings.”

Amit Jain, Chief Executive Officer, Aditya Birla Renewables Limited, commented, “At ABRen, we believe the energy transition must be accompanied by innovation that enhances environmental sustainability. This partnership is an important step toward addressing the end-of-life challenges associated with wind turbine blades and advancing circularity within the renewable energy sector.”
