Power Grid Corporation of India Limited acquired Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited on October 16, 2025. The acquisition was completed through the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. The project involves establishing an inter-regional transmission system to relieve the loading of the 765 kV Vindhyachal-Varanasi D/c line. The project will operate on a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis.
Acquisition of VVTL
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) has acquired Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited (VVTL) on October 16, 2025. This acquisition was made through tariff-based competitive bidding.
Project Details
The acquired project aims to establish an inter-regional (NR-WR) transmission system. This system will alleviate the load on the 765 kV Vindhyachal-Varanasi D/c line. The project will operate on a build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis.
Project Scope
The project includes the establishment of a new 765 kV Sub-Station at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. It also encompasses 765 kV D/c Transmission Lines traversing Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Details of Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited (VVTL)
VVTL will operate in the power transmission sector. Powergrid had no prior related-party interest in VVTL. As of April 16, 2025, VVTL was incorporated and is yet to commence commercial operations. The acquisition cost Powergrid approximately Rs. 19.84 Crore, which includes 10,000 equity shares at par value of Rs. 10 each, along with VVTL’s assets and liabilities. Powergrid now holds 100% of VVTL.
