GRSE Secures Major Warship Construction Contract

On November 2, 2026, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking, announced the signing of a major contract with the Indian Navy. The agreement is for the construction of five Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs), a deal valued at approximately ₹32,000 crore.

Strategic Importance and Capabilities

This contract represents a significant milestone for GRSE and contributes to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative in defense manufacturing. GRSE emerged as the lowest bidder for this prestigious project, underscoring its competitive edge and extensive experience in building advanced warships. The Next Generation Corvettes will be equipped with enhanced capabilities, advanced sensors, and sophisticated weapons systems, designed to undertake multi-role operations including offensive missile attacks, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime interdiction.

Technical Specifications and Propulsion

These warships will measure 127 meters in length and 17.6 meters in beam, with a deadweight tonnage of 4,950 tonnes. They will feature an advanced Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine-Cross-Connect (CODAG-CC) propulsion arrangement, enabling a maximum speed of 26 knots and an endurance of 14 days. The vessels are designed to accommodate 11 officers and 139 sailors.

Advanced Systems and GRSE’s Legacy

The NGCs will be fitted with state-of-the-art weapons, including Medium Range Anti-Ship Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and 324 mm torpedo tubes, alongside advanced gun systems. The sensor suite will include an Electro-Optical Infrared Search and Track (EOIRST) system and a Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar (MFSTAR). GRSE, with a legacy dating back to 1884, has established itself as a leading warship builder, having delivered 118 warships to various naval forces and friendly foreign nations.

Current and Future Projects

Currently, GRSE is building nine other warships, including frigates and offshore patrol vessels, and has orders for 36 additional platforms, with 13 designated for export. The shipyard boasts modern infrastructure and capabilities to undertake concurrent construction of 28 ships, supported by a skilled design team and advanced technology.
