Tata Motors and Amazon have announced a significant collaboration to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s transportation network in India. This initiative marks a major step in scaling electric freight transportation, with the initial rollout focusing on within-city movements and an expansion to national corridors like the Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai route. The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission trucks and supports India’s transition to cleaner mobility.
Tata Motors and Amazon Partner on Electric Truck Deployment
Tata Motors Limited and Amazon have jointly announced a landmark collaboration to deploy 3,000 electric trucks within Amazon’s extensive transportation network in India. This initiative signifies the largest deployment of electric trucks by an e-commerce company in the country and represents Amazon’s commitment to extending fleet electrification beyond last-mile delivery.
Scaling Electric Freight Transportation
The deployment will see Tata Ultra E.7 electric trucks supporting urban freight movement, with a phased expansion planned for major national highways. A key focus area will be the electrification of the 2,800-km Delhi–Bengaluru-Chennai corridor along NH48, a vital artery spanning seven states. This ambitious plan aims to address barriers to electric truck adoption and showcase the scalability of zero-exhaust-emission vehicles in commercial operations.
Phased Rollout and Infrastructure Support
The initial phase of the rollout is scheduled to commence during India’s festive season, aligning with peak freight volumes. Amazon will utilize Tata Motors’ light and medium-duty electric trucks for its middle-mile logistics. The expansion to national corridors will be supported by dedicated charging infrastructure, including hubs being developed with partners like Yahhvi. This initiative also aligns with Delhi’s 2026 EV Policy, which offers incentives for electric truck adoption.
Government Support and Vision for Green Logistics
The collaboration has garnered support from government officials, emphasizing India’s drive towards electric mobility. Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, Hon’ble Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, highlighted that the partnership demonstrates sustained demand for electric trucks manufactured in India, with government schemes like PM E-DRIVE and PLI Auto continuing to support this transition. Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Transport & IT, Government of Delhi, noted that decarbonizing logistics is a crucial next step in improving air quality.
Tata Motors’ Role and Technology
Tata Motors will supply the electric trucks, while Amazon’s carrier partners will own and operate them. The Tata Ultra E.7 model features an integrated e-axle, CCS2 fast charging, regenerative braking, and a crash-tested cabin with high-voltage safety systems, designed for lower operating costs and higher uptime. This effort is part of Amazon’s broader goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and Tata Motors’ commitment to delivering future-ready, sustainable mobility solutions.
