The initiative focused on solving real-world airline operations problems, specifically passenger re-accommodation during disruptions, using quantum computing. Mphasis, a global Al-led technology solutions provider, has partnered with Copa Airlines, a leading Latin American airline, and several prestigious academic institutions including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the University of Calgary, to launch an international Quantum Computing Challenge. Announced on September 22, 2026, this initiative aims to leverage cutting-edge quantum computing solutions for optimizing complex airline operations.
Focus on Airline Operations Optimization
The challenge specifically targeted the critical issue of passenger re-accommodation during airline schedule disruptions. Teams from academia and industry collaborated to reimagine and resolve this problem using advanced quantum computing techniques. The objective was to enhance the speed and accuracy of solutions, thereby improving passenger re-accommodation rates without increasing solution runtime. Mphasis’ Airlines Vertical and NEXT Labs, its R&D arm, played a key role in defining the problem and criteria, alongside Copa Airlines.
Academic and Industry Collaboration
The competition involved multiple phases, including an initial evaluation of 22 IIT teams, from which six were selected to advance. These teams then competed with participants from the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge in a phase utilizing real Copa Airlines data and quantum infrastructure from partners like Classiq, Multiverse computing, and qBraid. The solutions developed encompassed the entire pipeline, from flight segment impact identification to optimal passenger reassignment.
Bridging Research and Implementation
Mphasis, along with IIT-Madras and Quantum City, a quantum ecosystem developer, shortlisted three solutions for presentation to Copa Airlines leadership. The winners will receive a cash prize and joint recognition. Srikumar Ramanathan, Chief Solutions Officer at Mphasis, highlighted the challenge’s role in demonstrating how quantum optimization can significantly improve efficiency and decision-making in airline operations. Julio Toro, Chief Information Officer at Copa Airlines, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the potential of quantum computing to redefine future airline operations.
