Background of the Dispute
The litigation involves a demand letter issued by the Office of Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur, raising a demand of ₹1902,72,53,760/-. The demand relates to a revised assessment of shortfall in the dispatch of minerals from Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chromite Block. The alleged violation pertains to Rule 12-A of the Minerals Concession Rules, 2016.
Court Proceedings and Interim Order
Tata Steel had previously filed a Writ Petition before the Hon’ble High Court of Orissa at Cuttack, seeking to quash the Demand Letter. The Hon’ble High Court had granted an interim protection, restraining authorities from taking coercive steps. This interim order was initially scheduled to last until September 2, 2025, then extended to October 9, 2025.
Current Status
The Hon’ble High Court heard the matter on October 9, 2025. Based on the order copy, the hearing is now scheduled for November 6, 2025. The interim protection has been extended until the next date of hearing.
