The company has transitioned electricity sourcing for four of its plants to wind and solar power, and integrated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing. This initiative is expected to reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 80% for its G.657.A2 Fibre and contribute to its Net-Zero ambitions.

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) has announced significant progress in its sustainability efforts, transitioning to 100% green power for its manufacturing operations. This move is a key step towards the company’s decarbonization goals and its ambition to achieve Net-Zero emissions.
Key Decarbonization Initiatives

Green Power Transition: STL has shifted a significant portion of its electricity sourcing away from conventional fossil-fuel-based grid power to renewable energy generated from wind and solar sources. This transition covers four of the company’s manufacturing plants located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra. The initiative, enabled by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), is projected to result in a ~65% market-based scope 2 emission reduction in its Optical Fibre (OF) and Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) plants.

Green Hydrogen Integration: The company has successfully integrated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing operations. This is a critical step in the optical fibre production process, historically reliant on conventionally produced hydrogen and oxygen. This integration allows STL to decarbonize one of the most challenging stages in the optical fibre value chain.

Product Carbon Footprint Reduction: STL has achieved an approximately 80% reduction in carbon emission for its G.657.A2 Fibre, lowering it from 4.7 Kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre (fkm) to 0.9 Kg CO₂e/fkm. The company also highlights its range of Eco-labelled Certified Optical Products as part of its extended decarbonization efforts.

Corporate Mobility Policy: STL has updated its corporate mobility policy to encourage the adoption of low carbon-emission vehicles, introducing incentives and enhanced limits for employees opting for Electric and Hybrid vehicles. This aims to systematically lower its Scope 3 operational carbon footprint.
