Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital Limited has launched the World’s First Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP) Centre at its flagship facility in Chennai. This innovative centre will offer advanced clinical treatments for complex corneal disorders using the proprietary Pinhole Pupilloplasty technique, developed by Chairman Dr. Amar Agarwal. The procedure does not require donor corneal tissue, addressing the global shortage of donor corneas and potentially improving vision for millions.
World’s First Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre Launched
Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital Limited (AEHL), a subsidiary of Dr. Agarwals Health Care Limited, has officially launched the World’s First Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP) Centre. This pioneering facility is located at AEHL’s flagship hospital on T.T.K. Road, Alwarpet, Chennai.
Innovative Corneal Treatment
The centre will provide advanced clinical treatments using the Pinhole Pupilloplasty technique, a novel procedure developed by Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman of Dr. Agarwals Health Care Limited. This technique is designed to address complex corneal disorders, offering a new avenue for vision restoration. The inauguration took place on August 27, 2026, by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. C. Joseph Vijay.
Addressing Global Corneal Shortage
A significant advantage of the Pinhole Pupilloplasty procedure is that it does not require donor corneal tissue. This is particularly relevant given the global shortage of donor corneas, where an international survey indicated approximately 12.7 million people worldwide were awaiting corneal transplantation, with only one donor cornea available for every 70 people in need. The procedure works by modifying the eye’s optical system to create a precisely centered pupillary aperture, improving vision quality by blocking scattered light.
Expanding Access and Training
Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal stated that the centre is an important milestone for enhancing access and adaptation of this surgical innovation. It will provide a structured pathway from diagnostics to surgery and long-term monitoring, also serving as a platform for training ophthalmologists on identifying suitable patients for the procedure. Dr. Manoj Khatri highlighted that innovation becomes meaningful when it translates into solutions that change patients’ lives.
The hospital also plans to expand training in this technique, with over 50 ophthalmologists expected to undergo training annually through workshops and academic programs. The Alwarpet centre will function as a comprehensive program encompassing diagnostics, patient selection, surgery, postoperative assessment, follow-up, research, and training.
Community Eye Health Initiatives
This launch builds upon Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital’s previous community initiatives, including a large-scale eye-screening drive for schoolchildren in Tamil Nadu, where over 16,000 students were screened. The Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre marks a step forward in integrating advanced optics, microsurgery, tissue preservation, and precision patient selection to improve eye care accessibility.
