L&T Secures Major Airport Infrastructure Project
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced today, August 20, 2026, that its Transportation Infrastructure business vertical has secured a large order to design and build the Automated People Mover (APM) System for Phase 1 of Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport. This significant win comes from a consortium including Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
Project Details and Scope
The APM System is a crucial component of the airport’s long-term expansion program, aimed at transforming Al Maktoum International Airport into the world’s largest airport, capable of handling 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually. The scope of work for the MHI-L&T consortium includes the turnkey delivery of a fully integrated APM System. This encompasses the design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning, and ensuring the operational readiness of all associated infrastructure and systems.
Under the Design-and-Build contract, L&T will be responsible for the design, procurement, delivery, and integration of vital APM infrastructure. This includes guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors, and depot equipment.
Strategic Significance and L&T’s Expertise
Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President & Head – Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, highlighted the project’s complexity and L&T’s unique position to deliver. “With challenging execution milestones, advanced technologies and multiple system interfaces including guideway, power supply, state-of-the-art telecom, platform screen doors and depot equipment, this project exemplifies the scale and complexity of integrated APM Rail Systems that L&T is uniquely positioned to deliver,” he stated.
He further added that L&T’s extensive integrated systems experience, supported by its Engineering Designs Centre, and MHI’s proven APM Systems, will ensure a strong focus on safety and quality. This project further solidifies L&T’s credentials in the region and capitalizes on emerging opportunities in the West Asian railway and transit sector, aligning with ongoing investments in next-generation mobility solutions across the GCC.
