GMR Airports: Bhogapuram International Airport Begins Commercial Operations

GMR Airports Limited has announced the commencement of commercial operations at the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh. The new airport, developed by GVIAL, marks a significant milestone for regional connectivity and economic growth. The launch included historic first flights to domestic and international destinations, signalling a new era for aviation in North Andhra Pradesh.

Bhogapuram International Airport Operational

GMR Airports Limited (GAL) announced today, August 17, 2026, that the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, located in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh, has officially commenced commercial operations. This landmark event was marked by the arrival and departure of inaugural domestic and international flights, underscoring the airport’s readiness to serve as a key aviation gateway for North Andhra Pradesh.

The development and operation of the airport are managed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), a subsidiary of GAL, under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model. This commencement ushers in a new phase of enhanced connectivity, economic opportunities, and regional growth for the area.

Historic First Day of Operations

The inaugural day featured several significant flights, including the first domestic flights connecting Hyderabad with Visakhapatnam and vice-versa. International connectivity was also established with inaugural IndiGo flights to Abu Dhabi and Scoot flights to Singapore. All arriving flights were ceremonially greeted with a water cannon salute, celebrating the airport’s vibrant start.

The airport was inaugurated by dignitaries including the Hon’ble Minister for Civil Aviation, Shri Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, highlighting the project’s importance. The facility is designed with an initial capacity of 6 million passengers annually, with plans for phased expansion to over 40 million passengers per annum. Its 3,800-metre Code 4E runway is capable of handling wide-body aircraft, positioning it as a critical hub for future domestic and international expansion, as well as air cargo capabilities.

He further added, “This airport will serve as a powerful catalyst for trade, tourism, investment, and employment, while strengthening regional and global connectivity and supporting the long-term economic growth of North Andhra Pradesh.”

The airport was also inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on August 1, 2026.
