Jupiter Wagons Secures Major Energy Storage Projects

Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) announced on August 10, 2026, that its subsidiary, JEM Energy, has emerged as the successful bidder for two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in West Bengal. The combined capacity of these projects is 100 MW/400 MWh. These projects, located in Jeerat and Kharagpur, were awarded through e-reverse auctions conducted under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL).

Strengthening BESS Business and Order Book

The successful bids involve the supply and commissioning of BESS projects valued at approximately INR 400 crore. These projects will operate under a 15-year Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model with WBSEDCL, providing JEM with enhanced revenue visibility. This development significantly scales up Jupiter Electric Mobility’s existing BESS business, increasing its order book to approximately 500 MWh, valued at over INR 500 crore. The company is targeting a BESS order book of approximately INR 1,000 crore by FY27, underscoring its confidence in India’s rapidly expanding energy storage market.

Strategic Expansion in Energy Transition

Mr. Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, stated that these successful bids represent an important milestone for JWL and JEM Energy, aiding the development of a scalable energy storage business. He highlighted that these projects add meaningful scale to the BESS order book and reinforce confidence in the long-term opportunity for energy storage in India. The ambition to build an INR 1,000 crore BESS order book reflects the rapid development of this business and the opportunities seen across utility-scale and commercial applications. JWL aims to support India’s evolving power infrastructure as it moves towards a renewable-led system.

These wins further strengthen JWL’s presence in the energy transition ecosystem and align with the Company’s strategy to expand into high-growth businesses beyond its traditional railway and mobility operations. For JEM, these projects provide significant scale and a stronger platform to pursue further utility-scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) opportunities across India.
